This book builds on a lot of the work I was most passionate about at BuzzFeed, which had to do with unearthing stories of amazing women throughout history. In a world filled with so much content, and in a job where I was expected to know everything, nothing was more thrilling than discovering something I had never even heard of. It was impossible not to notice that many of these stories had to do with incredible women from hundreds of years ago, and to consider why that be. History was written by men, and they left out — or downplayed — the contributions of so many women. This book is an attempt to resurface a few of them.

The women highlighted in the book include Alice Guy-Blaché, the first film director (of any gender); Mitsuye Endo, whose Supreme Court case led to the end of Japanese internment; Kate Warne, the first female detective who also helped thwart a pre-Civil War plot against Lincoln’s life; Ida B. Wells, a fiery activist who pioneered data journalism; Eunice Newton-Foote, who predicted global warming in the 1800s; and so many more.
